The Qur’an warns of hypocrites—two-faced people who fake belief while siding with the enemy. Truth faded, deception rose. “Allah mocks them” is both a warning and a judgment.
Verse of the Episode:
"And when they meet those who believe, they say, 'We believe'; but when they are alone with their devils, they say, 'Indeed, we are with you; we were only mocking.'"
"Allah mocks them and prolongs them in their transgression while they wander blindly." (Al-Baqarah: 14-15)
This episode exposes the danger of two-faced individuals in politics—whether from the regime or the opposition. The Qur'anic verse highlights the hypocrisy of those who shift their faces depending on who they’re with, showing loyalty to both sides for personal gain.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Indeed, the worst of people in the sight of Allah on the Day of Judgment is the one with two faces: who comes to these with one face and to those with another.”
Such hypocrisy—speaking to each group with what pleases them—is a form of religiously forbidden flattery (mudāhana). The episode raises deep questions:
- Why do some hide behind fake masks?
- Has honesty become a flaw in society?
- Why has purity and sincerity vanished from our lives?
In the end, God responds to such people not just with justice, but with a warning:
“Allah mocks them and lets them go on blindly in their transgression.”
