Spending in hardship is a duty. Early Muslims gave zakat early to aid the needy. Let today’s wealthy give too—perhaps they’ll bring joy to the Prophet ﷺ as his companions once did.
With Dr. Zaher Baadarani, Head of the Syrian Future Movement
Title: "And from what We have provided them, they spend"
This episode emphasizes the urgent religious duty of supporting those in hardship, especially during the Syrian revolution. Classical scholars, including Ibn Jubayr, Al-Hasan Al-Basri, Al-Zuhri, Al-Awza’i, and imams from the Shafi’i, Hanafi, and Hanbali schools, all supported giving zakat before its due time in times of crisis. Citing hadiths, including one from Al-‘Abbas and another in Sahih Muslim, Dr. Baadarani calls on wealthy Muslims to follow the example of the early believers who rushed to help the poor.
He urges today's rich—especially Syrians and Arabs—to give generously, hoping to bring joy to the face of the Prophet ﷺ as the companions once did.
