"This paper analyzes the concept of “unity” as a national and human goal, proposing a vision for a unified modern Syrian state".
The struggle of nations to gain independence from Western colonialism led to the drawing of national borders according to their will and sacrifice.
These borders were eventually recognized by international norms in their current form.
The concept of “unity” in the Arab world emerged as an identity-based response to the Western partition of the Arab and Islamic worlds through two approaches:
• A nationalist approach, which called for Arab unity under a single leadership across all Arab countries.
This eventually materialized in the Arab League, which nationalists saw as the beginning of true unity to make the Arab nations one homeland.
• A contemporary Islamic movement approach, which sought to bring all Muslim countries under a single leadership.
This was based on the historical concept of the Caliphate and led to the formation of the Muslim World League as a first step toward unifying the Islamic world.
Military rule in most Arab and Islamic countries played a major role in tearing these regions apart and fueling discord among their peoples.
This served to distract them entirely from the concept of unity.
We believe that “unity” is an ultimate goal connected to multiple dimensions, whether social, psychological, spiritual, or even philosophical.
It is therefore a state or ideal that individuals and groups strive to achieve.
We believe that “unity” is a national concept that rejects further fragmentation or division beyond what already exists.
Accordingly, we call for the establishment of a modern national state as the only realistic solution to end national despotism.
We believe that “unity” in all its forms and expressions is a natural right of peoples that we seek to promote and strengthen.
We believe in global citizenship by establishing the concept of human unity as a supreme goal.
This can be achieved through a global agreement governed by laws that preserve the uniqueness of each society and people while granting them genuine freedom within a unified framework of human rights.
We believe that unity is realized through the promotion of freedom of expression and pluralism in an interactive societal manner.
This approach should form the foundation of progress, development, and modernity in Syrian society.
We believe that unity is based on voluntary integration among peoples who understand the necessity of uniting.
This unity is a sustainable strategic gain that enhances their global capabilities and increases their economic and political achievements.
We emphasize the need to preserve Syrian unity both socially and politically.
We must protect the state and society from separatist calls, whether internal or external.
We believe that achieving unity requires the unified effort of the entire civil society, regardless of differing visions.
The first step toward national unity is the unification of civil society goals.
We view unity as a concept that helps reduce religious, ethnic, and other societal divisions.
It is a source of enrichment for the entire society and a key factor in its strength and growth.
We believe that the alternative to unity is continued isolation and the fragmentation of the nation and society into fragile and weak cantons that will soon divide further.
We believe that tyranny and corruption exploit the slogan of unity to serve narrow interests.
The solution lies in exposing them and raising awareness in society so they do not undermine the people's project of reviving global citizenship through the consolidation of human unity.
